PERsonal perFORmance in Mammographic Screening

Eligibility to sit PERFORMS

In the UK the PERFORMS scheme is available for any individual who is currently employed within the NHS Breast Screening Programme and who is reading and interpreting breast screening cases. This typically means Consultant Radiologists, Advanced Practitioner Radiographers and Breast Clinicians or Breast Physicians. Various others also take part. In 2010 there were over 650 individuals who undertake such a role across all the UK’s screening centres which number over 100.

PERFORMS is not suitable for individuals who are undergoing training in breast screening as it is deliberately geared towards being difficult in order to stretch the skills of those who are regularly screening – therefore we actively discourage people such as Radiological Registrars who are only rotating through breast screening from taking part as they will inevitably score poorly and so can be disheartening.

For radiographers who are training to become advanced practitioners then we offer an associated scheme, IMPROVE, which acts to help ensure that they meet a set minimum case reading standard.

Our training cases will help individuals improve their breast cancer identification skills.
